The Lancashire and Cheshire Telephonic Exchange Company Limited was formed as a subsiduary of the United Telephone Company on 21 May 1881 with a capital of £250,000 to operate in Lancashire, Cheshire, the Isle of Man, Westmorland and North Wales. The Company commenced operations in Liverpool and Manchester by absorbing The Lancashire Telephonic Exchange Limited, and later other small telephone concerns in the area.
