Womack, Nathan Anthony, 1901-1975
Nathan Womack was a native of Reidsville, NC., graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in 1922, and received his M.D. from Washington University in 1924. He spent the years between 1924-30 in postdoctorate surgical education and returned to Washington University in 1930 as a member of the surgical faculty. He was a member of the American Board of Surgery and served on the editorial board of the Annals of Surgery and The American Surgeon. He was active in many professional surgical and medical societies, and served on several boards throught his life and career, most notably the National Board of Medical Examiners. In 1948 he became chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Iowa. In 1951 he returned home to become chair of the Deptartment of Surgery at the University of North Carolina. Author of over 120 professional articles, he was awarded the Kenan Professorship of Surgery and was chosen Professor of the Year in 1961. He retired in 1967, whereupon the Nathan A. Womack Surgical Society was established, which awards a scholarship to the student best epitomizing Dr. Womack's excellence in teaching, investigation, and patient care. Dr. Womack died in 1975.
