Halbert, Henry S. (Henry Sale), 1837-1916
Henry S. Halbert was born in Pickens County, Ala. From 1860 to 1861, he served as a soldier on the Texas frontier. When the southern states seceded from the Union, he joined the 6th Texas Cavalry where he served until the end of the war. From 1866 to 1888 he taught at Waco University in Texas and at other academic instituions in Texas, Mississippi, and Alabama. From 1884 to 1899 he was involved in educational work among the Choctaws in Mississippi. In 1904, he began to work at the Alabama Dept. of Archives and History He was the author of numerous publications on the Creek Wars of 1813 and 1814, as well as the Choctaw Indians. He was co-editor of a dictionary of the Choctaw language and also wrote a history of the Choctaw Indians, which was never published.
