Florida. Military Dept.
The Military Dept. was created in 1921 (Ch. 8502, Laws), it was directed by the Adjutant General, and its headquarters were in St. Augustine. The state militia has existed since territorial days, becoming the Florida State Troops in 1887 (Ch. 3707, Laws) and the Florida National Guard in 1909 (Ch. 5930, Laws). The Military Dept. and the Adjutant General controlled the Florida units of the National Guard; supervised all the arms, troops, branches, and stores of the Guard; and transported and supported any armed forces required by the state to maintain law and order. The Military Dept. became the Dept. of Military Affairs in 1973 (Ch 73-93, Laws).
