Herron, Lee, 1846-1937

Leander ("Lee") Herron was born on December 29, 1846, in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He served as a Corporal in Company A of the 3rd United States Infantry. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions near Fort Dodge on September 2, 1868, when he voluntarily assisted a party of four enlisted men who had been attacked by Indians, remaining with them until relief arrived. Herron died on April 5, 1937.

Robert M. Wright was a leading merchant in Dodge City, Kansas. Born in Maryland in 1846, he moved to Kansas as a young man. By 1913, he had served as Dodge City's mayor and postmaster, as well as county treasurer, state forest commissioner, and as representative for Ford county in the Kansas state legislature. In 1913 he published Dodge City, The Cowboy Capital.... which included two accounts ("Fight at Little Coon Creek" and "Capturing the Box Family") that Wright attributed to Lee Herron.
