Patents and deeds issued at time of wheat boom and railroad expansion south in California's San Joaquin Valley (1867-1872). Majority purchased by two wheat tycoons: Lewis M. Hickman, twice mayor of Stockton, Calif. and owner of large tracts in Stanislaus County; and John W. Mitchell, founder of Turlock and owner of large tracts in Stanislaus and Merced Counties.
