John Cowper Granbery Family .

John C. Granbery senior (1829-1907) was a Methodist Bishop in Virginia who also helped establish a Methodist presence in Brazil in 1886. His descendants continued to work for the Methodist Church in Brazil into the 20th century and their correspondence is present, including that of his son-in-law the Reverend Dr. Hugh Clarence Tucker. Tucker spent his adult life in Brazil and was awarded Brazil's Order of the Southern Cross. Although a pacifist, Granbery Sr. served as chaplain in the confederate army and was wounded in the battle at Frazier's Farm. His son, John C. Granbery, Jr., (1874 -1953) was a liberal, peace activist, Methodist minister, prohibitionist, anti-Ku Klux Klan activist, and suffragist who spent most of his life in Texas. He taught at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, and later published a liberal Christian magazine, The Emancipator.
