Joset, John Joseph Augustine, 1810-1900.
Joseph Joset was born August 27, 1810, in Courfaivre, of Canton Berne, Switzerland. The youngest of five sons, he saw three of his four brothers also choose vowed Catholic religious life. After completing four years of studies in the Jesuit College at Freiburg, Joset joined the Society of Jesus in 1830 and was ordained ten years later. He embarked for St. Louis, via New Orleans, in early 1843 as one of four recruits for Fr. De Smet's newly formed Rocky Mountain Mission. Arriving too late in the season to join a wagon train westward, the party overwintered and departed onto the Oregon Trail the following April. Thus commenced a pioneer missionary relationship with the Coeur d'Alene and Colville Indians that was to span the remainder of the centurry.
