Chemist.
Mackintosh was born in England and received his early education there, winning many awards and citations for his work in chemistry. He came to American in 1873, entering the School of Mines, Columbia College (1877 EM and CE). After graduation he held positions in the Metallurgical Laboratory and as insttuctor in chemistry at Lehigh University where he showed exceptional promise as a research chemist. He became interested in the chemistry of minerals and did much original work in this field. In 1888 he left Lehigh to become chemist for the Consolidated Gas Company of New York, which position he still held at the time of his death in April 1891 at the age of 35.
