The department of vocational and technical education was formed in 1970 when the departments of agricultural education, distributive education, home economics education, trade and industrial education and the Minnesota Research Coordinating Unit were brought together into one cohesive unit to better serve the mission of creating, developing and testing ideas relevant to improving occupational education. The department was renamed the department of work, community, and family education and is currently a part of the College of Education and Human Development.
