Harris, Daniel H., 1958-

Daniel Henry Harris was born on June 16, 1907. He is best known for his work in counseling psychology and vocational guidance. Harris received his A.B. in 1927 from Columbia University. He went on to earn his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees, both in psychology, from Columbia in 1928 and 1931, respectively. Harris continued his post-graduate education from 1936, 1956 at Columbia University, City College of New York, Bucknell University, the New School for Research, and San Diego State University. He accepted a teaching position at Lehigh University (1930-1935) and taught several summer sessions at the College of the City of New York from 1936-1937. Harris spent one year teaching at Brooklyn College (1946-1947) and one year at Champlain College (1952-1953). he taught part-time at San Diego City College (1954-1959) and Southwestern College, Chula Vista (1962). Later Harris worked as an instructor at the San Diego campus of the California School of Professional Psychology (1972-1984).

Harris held numerous positions outside academia. He maintained a private practice in new York from 1937 to 1954 and a practice in San Diego from 1953 until his retirement in 1984. Harris held positions at the U.S. Public Health Service as an assistant psychologist (1936-1937) and the Greater New York Coordinating Committee for German refugees as a vocational adviser (1938-1939). he joined the war effort in 1942 and had the title of Psychologist Officer in the U.S. Navy until 1946. he held numerous positions within the field of vocational guidance including his role as Vocational Adviser and Rehabilitation Specialist for the Veterans Administration (1946-1949). Harris worked as the principal investigator on a contract research project from 1949-1952 concerning the rehabilitation of those suffering from tuberculosis. the project, The Saranac Lake Study and Craft Guild, was supported by the Office of Naval Research, the National Tuberculosis Association, and teh U.S. Public Health Service. he received a research grant from the San Diego County Hospital Medical Research Foundation in 1965 and worked as the senior clinical psychologist for the San Diego Mental Health Services from 1962 to 1972.
