Pennsylvania; mustered into the 17th Infantry Regiment (formerly the 1st Artillery Regiment), Pennsylvania militia, as a private, May 1861; mustered out, August 1861; mustered into Company C of the 121st Infantry Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, as the captain, September 1862; wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1, 1863; died of wounds [or, rather, mustered out?], November 6, 1863. Full name: Joseph Frank[lin?] Sterling.
