Said, Edward W., 1935-2003

Edward Said (b. Nov. 1, 1935 Jerusalem, Palestine-d. Sept. 24, 2003, New York City, NY) grew up in Palestine and Egypt and relocated to the United States to attend high school. He graduated from Princeton University (BA, 1957) and Harvard University (MA, 1960; PhD, 1964). In 1963, Said joined the Comparative Literature department of Columbia University and also taught at Harvard, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, and Yale. While an English professor, Said became an established cultural critic with the book Orientalism (1978). He was also an accomplished pianist; in 2004 Birzeit University, Palestine, renamed their music school the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music.
