Vlamingh, Willem Hesselsz. de, 1640-
Dutch sea-captain who explored the southwest coast of Australia (then "New Holland") in the late 17th century. His expedition left Amsterdam in 1696 looking for the "Ridderschap van Holland". He discovered Rottnest Island on 29 December 1696 and the Swan River on 10 January 1697. He travelled 80 kms inland on the Swan River with ship's artist Victorszoon, making pictorials of the coast. On 4 February 1697, he landed at Dirk Hartog Island where he replaced Dirk Hartogs̉ pewter plate with one bearing a record of both visits.
