Buildings and Grounds Maintenance Association (Harvard University)

The Buildings and Grounds Maintenance Association was an independent union of Harvard employees in the Buildings and Grounds Department and was set up circa 1947. In December 1966 the Association voted to affiliate with a group known as the Boston Crafts Maintenance Council, a committee of craft union business agents. However, the University refused to recognize the Council as the bargaining agent for the Association, claiming that the Association was represented by Building Services Employees International. Members of the Association went on strike in early June 1967. Later that month, a meeting was set up between Harvard, the Association, the Council, and the Building Services Employees International, and workers returned to their jobs.
