J. Paul Getty Museum. Dept. of Public Information and Visitor Services
Originally titled the Department of Public Affairs, the Department of Public Information and Visitor Services of the J. Paul Getty Museum grew out of public events and public relations activities originally handled by the Museum Director's Office, and often by Museum Director Stephen Garrett himself. The arrival of Deborah Ashin in 1974 as Public Affairs Director changed the focus of work done by the department; she began issuing press releases and other public affairs correspondence and announcements; later she became the primary coordinator of the concert series and dealt with various requests regarding music at the Museum. Ashin served as Public Affairs Director from 1974-1976; in 1977 her title was changed to Public Information Director. She was succeeded by Cathy La Scola in 1979. Sometime in 1976 or 1977 the department's name was changed from the Department of Public Affairs to the Department of Public Information. Beginning approximately 1981, other departments, such as Trust Administration, Communications, Event Production Services, and Events & Food Services, began to assume responsibility for many of the functions of the department.
