South Western Turnpike Company.

Company chartered in 1846 by the state of Virginia to construct a macadam road from Salem, Va., to Wytheville, Va., to the Tennessee State line. Work was completed to Wytheville by 1848 and continued on to Seven Mile Ford in Smyth County before work ceased due to a number of political and economic factors including the coming of railroads.
