Governor of Bengal. Entered the service of the East India Company about 1750 and went to Bengal. Member of Bengal Council. In charge of the province of Chittagong, 1761-1765. Member of the Select Committee in Bengal. In charge of Burdwan and Midnapur, 1761-1765. Succeeded Clive as Governor of Bengal, Jan. 1767-Dec. 1769.
