Société nationale des beaux-arts (France)
French independent Salon, founded in 1889 by a group of artists including Meissonier, Puvis de Chavannes, Carolus-Duran (its first three presidents), Carriere, Rodin and Roll, in protest against the system of awards and jury selection at the official Salon. Alfred Roll, the painter (1847-1919), became the fourth president of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1905 and served in that position until his death.
