Faculty Wives' Dinners.
Volunteer committees organized social dinners in the Quadrangle Club for the wives of University of Chicago faculty and trustees between 1936 and 1980. The events were planned as a counterpart to the annual dinner given by University Trustees for faculty members. The Faculty Wives' events included entertainment productions as well as social dinners. Early productions were often unrehearsed theatrical readings, skits, song recitals, and games. Beginning in 1950, the productions took the form of more elaborate theatrical events, with the presentation of original material whose subject matter satirized current events and campus life.
