Literary scholar and author. Authority on Eugene O'Neill, Robinson Jeffers, and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Education: B.A. (1924) and M.A. (1927), Harvard University; Ph. D. (1929), University of Chicago. Taught at the University of Chicago, Harvard University, and the University of California, Berkeley. Resigned his teaching position at Berkeley in 1953 over the loyalty oath controversy. Born February 1, 1903. Died March 16, 1991.
