Educator, sports historian and Olympic Games committeeman; B.A., North Central College, Naperville, IL, (1905), M.A., U. of Chicago, (1906) and Ph.D., Columbia U., (1939); faculty, U. of Pennsylvania, (1931-1953); director, division of instruction, Dept. of Physical Education; served on American Olympic Executive Committee (1930-1942); notable for his contributions in establishing the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules for swimming as well as for his leadership in the summer camp movement during the 1920's'; admitted to the International Swimming Hall of Fame (1972).
