Clifton Manufacturing Company.

The company was formed in 1880 in Clifton, S.C., by Dexter Edgar Converse and his South Carolina business associates with some northern financial support. It manufactured cotton cloth, especially sheetings, shirtings, and drills. There were only four presidents in the company's history: Dexter Converse (1880-1899); A.H. Twichell (1899-1916); J. Choice Evins (1916-1945); and Stanley Converse (1945-1971). The company's selling agents were Wheelwright, Eldredge and Co., Boston and New York, and O.H. Sampson, Boston. In 1965, Clifton became a division of the Dan River Mills.
