United States. Marshal (Arizona)
Office established in 1863/1864 in Tucson; headquarters was moved to Phoenix in 1901 with a permanent deputy's office remaining in Tucson. The U.S. Marshal was appointed by the President; principal duties included protection of public lands, supression of domestic insurrections, and enforcement of laws regulating land settlement, morals, labor relations and more.
