Marguerite Lucy Butler

Marguerite Lucy Butler was born in January 1879 in Hastings, England. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree and then trained as a teacher at Cambridge. After further training at the Women’s Missionary College in Edinburgh she was appointed by the London Missionary Society to Bangalore, India where as Principal she developed the Girls' High School and 'made it renowned throughout Mysore State and beyond', N. Goodall, A history of the London Missionary Society, 1895-1945, p. 65. She also carried out work with Zenana women and in vernacular schools and served as a member of Senate of the University of Mysore. She wrote a number of books including Hindu women at home published in 1921 by the London Missionary Society. She retired in 1921 but lived on in India until 1944. She died in 1951.
