Born to Carl Gottfried and Johanne Rosina (Koerner) Guenther in Weissenfels, Germany, Carl Hilmar Guenther (1826-1902) immigrated to the United States in 1848. Settling near Fredericksburg, Texas, in 1851, he established a gristmill and flourmill. In 1855, Guenther married Dorothea Wilhelmine Henriette Pape, with whom he had seven children, including Fritz, Arthur, and Erhard. In 1859, the family moved to San Antonio, where Guenther built the Southern Ice Company and another flourmill, which later became G. H. Guenther & Son, Inc.
