Lowell, John, 1824-1897
Lowell graduated from Harvard College (1843) and the Law School (1846). From 1856 to 1860 he edited the Monthly Law Reporter in which he criticized the Dred Scott decision. In 1865, President Lincoln appointed him United States district judge for Massachusetts and in 1878 he became circuit court judge for the first circuit focusing on common law and patents.
