Phelps & Dalton
Michael Dalton (1800-1879) and Sewell Phelps (1797- ) learned the craft of typefounding under Edward Haskell, manager of the Boston Type Foundry. Phelps was a printer from 1818 to 1829. In 1845, Phelps and Dalton purchased the Dickinson Type Foundry and the firm of Phelps, Dalton and Company became a leading eastern typefoundry. In 1864 Dalton sold his interest in the company. In 1872 the foundry at Federal and Channing Streets was destroyed in the Great Boston Fire; it was relocated at 150 Congress Street.
