First Congregational Church (Williamstown, Mass.)
The First Congregational Church of Williamstown, Mass., was organized in 1765 when Whitman Welch was called to preach in that town. Meetings were conducted first in a log school house and then, in 1768, in the first log meeting house. After two meeting houses burned, in 1798 and 1866, a new building was constructed in 1869. Pastors who succeeded Rev. Welch included Seth Swift (1779-1807), Ralph W. Gridley (1816-1834), Mason Noble (ca. 1865), and Albert Hopkins (1869-1872). Over the years, the Church served both Williams College and the town, providing as well a site for town meetings.
