Cabell, Ballard Hartwell, 1915-1980

Ballard Hartwell Cabell (1915-1980) was the only the son of Priscilla Bradley Sheppard and James Branch Cabell. He received instruction in painting both in Richmond and at St. Augustine, Florida and began to publically show his art work in the early 1950s. His medium was gouache, a technique of painting with opaque colors ground in water and mixed with gum. His paintings were known for their rich color and texture, expressed in a free abstract expressionist style. His step mother, Mrs. Margaret Freeman Cabell encouraged his work and helped arrange exhibitions of his art. He died May 8, 1980.
