Chicago American Indian Oral History Pilot Project

Project to document the history of the Chicago American Indian population via tape-recorded oral interviews with older members of the community.

Funded by the Illinois Humanities Council in 1982, the project was directed by Herbert Hoover and David R. Miller of the Newberry's D'Arcy McNickle Center for the History of the American Indian. Interviewed individuals mirrored the composition of the Chicago American Indian community, which came largely from the northern and central Great Plains and the western Great Lakes regions. Among the twenty-three subjects were eight Sioux, five Chippewa, and four Winnebago.
