Birdsall, William W. (William Wilfred), 1854-1909

William W. Birdsall was born into the Society of Friends in Richmond, Indiana in 1854. Previously a high school teacher and principal, he became the fifth President of Swarthmore College in 1898. During his Presidency he accomplished a complete reorganization of the teaching staff, the installation of a new heating system, the building of a new gym for male students, and the introduction of a premedical course. He hoped to increase the number of students by offering more scholarships. The Board decided that his training was inadequate for a college president and changed the focus of the college in opposition to his views. In 1902 he resigned as President, becoming the Principal of Girls' High School of Philadelphia where he remained until his death on March 17, 1909.
