Illinois. Railroad and Warehouse Commission
The Illinois Railroad and Warehouse Commission (1871-1913), comprised of three governor-appointed commissioners, supervised and oversaw Illinois railroads and warehouses. Specifically, these duties included initiating violation proceedings against railroad and warehouse companies; warehouse license cancelation; annual report issuance to the Governor on railroad and warehouse operation; grain inspection rules, regulations and rate establishment; and Chief Inspector of Grain supervision. An appeals committee was appointed to handle grain inspection complaints (1873), and the Commission was empowered to issue warehouse licenses (1907). Commission jurisdiction expanded to supervise express companies, water carriers and sleeping car companies; investiage railroad accidents and regulations; and public utility investigation (1911). The Commission was succeeded by the Illinois Public Utility Commission (1913).
