Marion Jewell Hay was born on March 9, 1900, near Irving, Kansas. She received her B.A. from the University of Illinois in 1921, and her M.A. from Ohio State University in 1924. From 1925-1928, she taught in the Romance Lanuages Department while working on her Ph. D. In 1926, she married Harry Hilts Hay, and in 1929 she became a professor of education at Florida State College for Women, until 1967. She was involved with relief groups that struggled to free political prisoners, help war victims, and provide health care for needy rural school children.
