Crebassa, Peter 1807-1898

Part Indian, part French, Crebassa was born in 1807 in the Red River County [Riviere Rouge] in Canada. He became the agent of the American Fur Company at Mackinac. In this capacity, he traveled the Lake Superior region until he married Nancy Roussain in 1837 at La Pointe. The following year they settled in L₂Anse, where Crebassa served as postmaster and established a fur trading post. For three years, Crebassa urged Bishop Baraga to serve the Chippewa at L₂Anse, at their request. In 1843, Baraga agreed to come to L₂Anse. Crebassa was a successful businessperson in all capacities. In addition to the fur trade, he also held a stone quarry. In 1850, his holdings were valued at $4,000.00. He died in 1898.
