Barrows, E. P. (Elijah Porter), 1807-1888

Elijah Porter Barrows was born in 1807 in Mansfield, Connecticut. He received the A.B. in 1826 and the A.M. in 1829 from Yale University. His D.D. degree was awarded by Dartmouth College in 1858. Barrows was ordained to the ministry in 1832 and for four years was an evangelist preacher in Connecticut. From 1835 to 1837, he served as pastor of the Dey Street Presbyterian Free Church in New York City. From 1837 to 1852, he was Professor of Sacred Literature at Western Reserve College in Hudson, Ohio, and from 1853 to 1865 was Professor of Hebrew Language and Literature at Andover Theological Seminary. He taught at Union Theological Seminary from 1869 to 1870 and in 1871 came to Oberlin Theological Seminary. He was made Professor of Hebrew and Old Testament Literature in 1872, a post he held until 1880. His major publications were Companion to the Bible (c. 1867) and Sacred Geography and Antiquities (1870). He was a frequent contributor to the Bibliotheca Sacra. He died in 1888.
