Ruffin family.
The Ruffin family was a prominent Virginia family of planters, with landed property on the south side of James River. Edmund Ruffin (1794-1865) was a noted agriculturalist, president of Virginia Agricultural Society, and the editor of the Farmer's Register. An ardent secessionist, he committed suicide upon receiving news of Lee's surrender.
Frank G. (Francis Gildart) Ruffin (1816-1892) was a planter of Chesterfield County, Va.. During the Civil War he served the Confederate army, rising to the rank of the Colonel. He resigned his commission in February of 1865. After the war he served as 2nd State Auditor, chairman of the Virginia Sinking Fund Commission, secretary of the Miller Manual Labor School, and editor of the Richmond Dispatch.
