Nex'wetem (Southern California Indian Basketweavers Association)

Nex’wetem was formed in 2000 to support the activities of local Native American weavers in Southern California. It was founded by Donna Mae Largo (Cahuilla) and Lorene Sisquoc (Ft. Sill Apache-Cahuilla). According to Sisquoc, “The purpose of Nex’wetem is to perpetuate the basket weaving heritage of Southern California indigenous peoples by engaging in activities and educational pursuits designed to achieve that end.” Members often share their knowledge and experience by participating in events at the Malki Museum. Many members are also members of the statewide California Indian Basketweavers Association.
