Squat Theatre (Theater group)

Squat Theatre began in 1969 as the Kassak Studio in Budapest, Hungary. Pressured by the Hungarian government because of its political and aesthetic radicalism, the group left Hunagry in 1976. Calling itself Elephant Theatre, the troupe performed in western Europe. After a year, the group emigrated to the United States where they adobted the name Squat Theatre. In 1978 Squat received an Obie Award for its original piece entitled Pig, Child, Fire.
