Saumarez, Philip, 1710-1747.

On 18 September, 1740 Admiral Lord George Anson left Portsmouth with six warships and two victuallers on a voyage of discovery around the world. The fleet travelled to South America, Macao (China) and the Island of Samar where the only remaining ship, the "Centurion" attacked and captured the Spanish galleon "Nostra Senora de Cabadonga," which was laden with gold silver and spices from Lima, Peru (the accumulated treasure was transported to the Tower of London). The first lieutenant on the "Centurion" was Philip Saumarez, who kept these logs.
