Smith, Hyrum Fisher, 1856-1923
Hyrum Fisher Smith was born 10 January 1856. He was the second child of eight in the family of John Smith and Hellen Maria Fisher. John Smith was serving as the Presiding Patriarch of the Church at the time that Hyrum was born. Hyrum married Hannah (Annie) Marie Gibbs 12 December 1878 in Salt Lake City, Utah. The couple moved to Hoytsville, Summit County, Utah, and later to Box Elder County, Utah. They had nine children; Ralph, Evaline, Ruby, Gertrude, Mary, Hyrum G., Annie, John, and Wilford. Hyrum worked for some time at the Lost Josephine Gold Mining Company, during which time he was away from his family. During this time, the older children worked to help support the family. Hyrum Gibbs Smith, the oldest of the children, was called to serve as the Presiding Patriarch of the Church in May of 1912. His father, Hyrum F. Smith, lived to see this appointment. Hyrum F. Smith died 9 March 1923, survived by his wife and all but one of his children.
