Reichel, Levin Theodore, 1812-1878

Levin T. Reichel was an author and Moravian clergyman, probably best known for writing various Moravian histories. He was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, the son of Charles Gotthold Reichel, a Moravian bishop and first principal of Nazareth Hall, later Moravian College. Levin was educated in Germany, returning to America in 1834, where he became deacon, presbyter, and finally bishop in the Moravian Church. He wrote several historical books, including a history of Nazareth Hall, and founded the first Moravian newspaper in the United States. Levin and his wife, Louisa Christina Sautter (1815-1861) had four daughters: Caroline Louisa, Ellen Elisabeth, Mary Catharine, and Adelaide Sophia.
