Appleton, William H. (William Hyde), 1842-1926.
William Hyde Appleton became the third President of Swarthmore College in 1889. A graduate of Harvard University and former preparatory student of Edward H. Magill, he was a Professor of Greek Language and Literature. He became Acting President upon President Magill's resignation, serving until a permanent replacement could be found.
