Feeney, Ryan.
Thomas Fitzgerald started a newspaper in Philadelphia called the City Item in 1847. As editor of the newspaper, Fitzgerald was aggressive in all that related to race equality. He was a sports fan who in 1860 helped to organize the Philadelphia Athletic Base Ball Club and became it's president, a position which he held for five years. He was elected president of the National Association of Base Ball Players in 1862.
