Born in Newburg, N.Y. Oct. 31, 1825; parents died when he was 7 yrs. old; moved with an uncle to Adrian, Mich., 1837; learned the carpenter's trade; deputy clerk of Lenawee Co., 1846; register of deeds,1850-54; stud. law & was partner with Judge T. M. Cooley, 1855-59; city attorney of Adrian, 1362; mayor; State senator 1853-69; chairman of judiciary comm. same period; speaker in H.R. , 1873; governor of Michigan, 1877-81; died in Adrian, Dec. 13,1886.
