South Dakota. Governor (1917-1921 : Peter Norbeck)
Born August 27, 1870 at Vermillion, South Dakota and died December 20, 1936 at Redfield, South Dakota. Appointed a State Council of Defense, created the rural credits system to aid farmers, recommended state owned and controlled coal mines, wildlife conservation, hydroelectric development on the Missouri River, and highway construction. Following his governorship served as United States Senator for sixteen years where he was instrumental in establishing Custer State Park and obtaining federal funding for Mt. Rushmore National Memorial.
