Robert C. Edwards was born 25 March 1914 in Fountain Inn, South Carolina. He graduated from Clemson College in 1933 with a degree in textile engineering. After working for J.P. Stevens, Charles B. Thoms, Aberfoyle, and Deering-Milliken, he returned to Clemson in 1956 to serve as Vice-President for Development. In 1959 the Board of Trustees elected Edwards to the presidency of Clemson College. Edwards retired from the post in 1979.
