Byng, Julian Hedworth George Byng, Viscount, 1862-1935

Julian Hedworth George Byng, 1st Viscount Byng of Vimy, (b. Sept. 11, 1862, Barnet, England-d. June 6, 1935, Thorpe-le-Soken, England), was Field Marshal in the British Army who began his military career as an enlisted soldier. He served in Egypt, Sudan, the Second Boer War, and the World War I. He served with the British Expeditionary Force in France during World War I as commander of the Canadian Corps in the Battle of Gallipoli and as commander of the British Third Army. After the War he was appointed Governor General of Canada and later served as commissioner of the London Metropolitan Police. He retired in 1932.
