Baden-Powell, George, 1847-1898
Politician and author Sir George Smyth Baden-Powell was born in Oxford, part of a large, successful, and aristocratic family. His education was interrupted by health concerns, and he travelled abroad for three years, before graduating from Balliol College, Oxford. He took a position as secretary to the governor of Victoria, and thereafter served on various commissions, as well as four terms in Parliament. In addition to travel and political activities, Baden-Powell was a prolific writer, completing several monographs as well as numerous reports and articles, chiefly on political topics such as economics and the British colonies.
