Hayes, John B., 1892-[ca. 1973].

A native of Tallapoosa Co., Ala., Hayes taught in rural Ala. schools for several years preceding World War I. In 1917 May he enlisted in Co. I, 167th U.S. Infantry, 42nd Rainbow Division and served in France during the war. From 1919-1940 Hayes worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Tex. and Fla. In 1940 Hayes suffered a nervous breakdown and received treatment for his mental illness in various Veterans Administration hospitals. He was released in 1945 after sucessful electroshock treatments. Hayes was later employed as a bookkeeper and secretary.
